    July 7th 2024 -“Traveling Light”

    Dear friends,

    THIS SUNDAY the Rev. Linda Faith Chalk will be leading us in worship.

    SUMMER SERVICES IN AUGUST at St. Andrew’s will continue.  The theme for August is simplicity.  What does a simple service look like?  It looks a lot like our pre-COVID services!  There won’t be any livestreaming on YouTube or a projector screen.  Instead, we’ll sing from the hymnbooks, just like we used to, and we can follow along with the scripture readings using the pew bibles.  Sunday School will be taking a break, and coffee hour will be replaced with refreshing lemonade – perfect for those hot summer days.  Let’s embrace simplicity, relax and enjoy the summer season!

    OUR GOSPEL LESSON is Mark 6: 1-13, “Jesus Rejected at Nazareth” and “Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles”.  Our readings this Sunday include two significant events in the life of our Lord.  The first is Jesus returning to Nazareth, where the locals doubt his authority because they know him only as a carpenter, and due to their lack of faith, he performs few miracles there.  Jesus then sends out the twelve apostles in pairs, instructing them to travel light and rely on the hospitality of others, trusting in God’s providence as they go.  They go out preaching repentance, casting out demons, and healing the sick.  The sermon title this week is, “Travelling light”.

    OUR NEW TESTAMENT LESSON continues in Mark 5: 21-43, “Jesus Heals a Woman and Jairus’ Daughter”.  In our Scripture reading this week, Jesus performs two miracles.  One involves raising a little girl from the dead.  Jairus, a synagogue leader, seeks Jesus’ help for his dying daughter, and despite hearing that she has passed away, Jesus urges Jairus to have faith.  Upon arriving at Jairus’s home, Jesus reassures the mourners that the girl is asleep, not dead.  Taking her hand, he says, ‘Little girl, get up!’  Instantly, she rises and walks, leaving everyone amazed.  Such is the power of God!  The sermon title this week is, “A story within a story”.

    Announcement:

    THE SEARCH CONTINUES:  As you may have heard in last week’s announcements during the service, our Interim Moderator, the Rev. Dr. Roland De Vries, regretfully informed us that Rev. Eugênio Anunciação has declined “the call” to become the next pastor at St. Andrew’s, despite its approval by the Presbytery of Montreal on Tuesday, June 18.  The search committee worked diligently over the past months, and the session made significant efforts, to find a new pastor.  Here is a link to the announcement by Roland https://youtu.be/J700DG35StM?si=HwOtzTwmyL55YY2p.  Although the search committee will take a break over the summer, they will resume the search for a new pastor in the fall.  Despite this setback, our congregation remains strong and faithful.  God is with us.

    June 23rd 2024 -“Which Calling is Yours?”

    Dear friends, 

    THIS SUNDAY the Rev. Linda Faith Chalk will be leading us in worship.

    THANK YOU for making last week’s Annual Church Barbecue such a success!  Your delicious salads and desserts added a special touch to the event.  We also appreciate everyone who helped with setup, grilling, and clean-up.  We also said our last farewells, and prayed over the Shin family as they travel back to Korea.  We will miss them dearly.

    OUR NEW TESTAMENT LESSON is Mark 4: 35-41, “Jesus Calms a Storm”.  Jesus and his disciples are caught in a fierce storm while crossing the Sea of Galilee.  As the disciples panic, Jesus, who is asleep, is awakened and calms the storm with his command, “Quiet!  Be still!”  The wind and waves obey him, and the storm ceases.  Martin Luther, the 16th century Reformer adds:  “The sea and wind rage, and the waves dash over us and threaten to sink us, but let them rage; it is ordained that the wind and sea obey his will.  The persecutions will not continue longer than is his pleasure, and, although they overwhelm us, yet they must be subject to him.  He is Lord over all; therefore, nothing will harm us.”  The sermon title for this week is, “Which calling is yours?”

    June 16th 2024 -“Our Small Worlds”

    Dear friends, 

    THIS SUNDAY the Rev. Dr. Roland De Vries will lead us in worship, receive new members, and observe Communion.

    As you may already be aware, Roland serves as Principal of the Presbyterian College in downtown Montreal and is also our Interim Moderator.  He will continue to be Moderator of Session meetings during our pulpit vacancy and guide the Search Committee as we seek to call a new minister to St. Andrew’s. 

    FOR THOSE PARTICIPATING IN COMMUNION in person, the Communion wafers are gluten free and the inner ring of glasses on the Communion trays contain white grape juice, the outer ring is red wine.  For those joining us through our livestream service on YouTube, please remember to prepare your own communion elements.  

    In his epistle to the Corinthians the Apostle Paul emphasizes the need for preparation and self-examination before participating in this blessed sacrament instituted by our Lord Jesus (1 Corinthians 11: 17-33).  Let us “Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalm 34: 8)

    OUR SCRIPTURE LESSON THIS WEEK continues from the book of Ezekiel 17: 22-24.  God promises to exalt the lowly and restore his people, likening them to a flourishing cedar under his care, bringing hope and renewal to all who trust in him.  This week’s sermon is titled “Our Small Worlds”.

    June 9th 2024 – “A new heart, a new life”

    OUR SCRIPTURE LESSON THIS WEEK is from the Prophet Ezekiel 36: 23-32.   This is a rich and beautiful text in which God speaks to his people—and it is especially important that God make promises to his people.  God makes promises to bring the people to their homeland, to take away all the sinfulness that is in their lives, and to give them a new heart.  In a way this is very good news, and beautiful news, though there is a bit of a challenging side.  The challenge comes from the fact that when God transforms our lives, we usually see the things we have done wrong—and it’s not always easy to be confronted with our sin and failure.  But this judgment isn’t the last word.  The last word is the word of promise, that God will make us new.

    OUR OLD TESTAMENT LESSON is 1 Samuel 3: 1-20, “The Lords Calls Samuel”.  In this passage, we encounter the young Samuel’s calling by God.  As Samuel serves under Eli in the temple, he hears God’s voice but initially does not recognize it.  With Eli’s guidance, Samuel learns to respond, “Speak, Lord, for your servant hears”.  Samuel was given word from God to tell Eli and it was not good news, but he respected God and obeyed Him.  This week’s sermon is titled “Setting Aside the Sacred Cows”.

    May 26th 2024 – “How is your ‘I’ Care”

    OUR GOSPEL LESSON is John 3: 1-17, “You Must Be Born Again”.  This passage describes Jesus telling Nicodemus, a Pharisee and “ruler of the Jews”, that one must be “born again” or “born from above” to enter God’s kingdom.  This answer puzzled Nicodemus, and Jesus goes on to respond in verse 8, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.  So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

    Christina Rossetti, a poet from the 19th century, wrote the poem “Who Has Seen the Wind?” (1872) about this passage;

    “Who has seen the wind? 

    Neither I nor you. 

    But when the leaves hang trembling,

    The wind is passing through.

    Who has seen the wind? 

    Neither you nor I. 

    But when the trees bow their heads,

    The wind is passing by.”

    ON PENTECOST SUNDAY, we commemorate the pivotal moment when the apostles and believers were gathered together and received the arrival of the Holy Spirit, symbolized by a mighty rushing wind and tongues of fire.  Just as God manifested his presence on Mount Sinai with thunder, wind, and fire, his glory filled the room where the apostles were, profoundly impacting Jerusalem.  This event marked the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, empowering believers to spread the gospel with boldness and transforming their lives and the world forever.  This Sunday, we look forward to the Rev. Christopher Clarke’s sermon, “New beginnings”.

    COMMUNICANTS CLASS  Please join us for two special Saturdays on June 8th and June 15th, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, as we host a Communicants Class led by the Rev. Dr. Roland De Vries, who serves as the Principal at the Presbyterian College in Montreal and is also our Interim Moderator as we continue our search for a new minister.  This class offers a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in becoming a member of our church and delving deeper into the teachings of the Reformed faith.  All are welcome to attend, even if you are already a member!  If you’re interested in joining the class, please reach out to one of our elders: Peter, Fouad, Clifford, or Jonathan.  We look forward to journeying together in faith and fellowship.

    OUR GOSPEL LESSON isLuke 24: 44-53.  Within this passage, Jesus reveals to his disciples the fulfillment of Scripture in his life, death, and resurrection, emphasizing the necessity of these events for salvation.  The 17th-century English theologian, John Owen, sheds light on this passage, “This is what the resurrection is to us.  It is God’s declaration that the account of our moral indebtedness has been paid, that God is satisfied.  This just God will never demand anything else for our salvation.  If Christ’s atoning work is really a finished work and if God has accepted it as the sole grounds of salvation, let us proclaim it as such.  If we have entered into it, having come to God on the basis of Christ’s sacrifice, then we have an obligation to make this gospel widely known.  They need to hear that all that is necessary for our salvation has been done by Christ.”
